The script’s usage spanned the time period between approximately 1500 BCE and 1200 BCE. Its full decipherment did not occur until 1953, when Michael Ventris, an architect who actually liked linguistics and epigraphy more than architecture, and John Chadwick, who provided insight into the early history of the Greek language, worked out the phonetic values of Linear B. The script consists mostly of syllabic signs, a fair number of logograms, a base-10 number system, and short vertical lines as word separators. It seems that ancient accounting records composed a majority of the clay tablets on which Linear B appears because a lot of them are lists of materials and goods.

At a great website - AncientScripts.com - you can see even more writing systems and see how ancient civilizations created phonetic signs by using pictographs of objects or logograms.

For Archer’s journey in my project, I wanted a graphic...

For Archer’s journey in my project, I wanted a graphic element that I thought looked ancient and Sci-Fi at the same time and that could be interpreted accordingly. I came across a font that I fell in love with - Linear B. What I loved most about Linear B is it’s beautiful, elegant, structures that each look like a complete graphic - even without additional signage or manipulation. Since our English alphabet had been assigned to the symbols in order to render them, it became necessary for me to remember what symbols where attached to which graphic.

Archer was born for my project as an 18 x 24 colored pencil...

Archer was born for my project as an 18 x 24 colored pencil drawing - aside from his beautiful plastic replica - and photos were manipulated in photoshop.

Archer, King of the Gorngonites
